Les Roches Rouges

A five star hotel at the water’s edge on the Corniche de l’Estérel, where 1950s modernist architecture, contemporary art and a Michelin starred table meet the Mediterranean.

At a glance:

Les Roches Rouges sits on the Corniche d’Or of the Estérel in Saint-Raphaël, facing the Mediterranean and the Île d’Or, roughly halfway between Cannes and Saint-Tropez. Built in the 1950s as a modernist coastal hotel, it is one of the few five star addresses on this stretch of coast and its recent renovation has been led by respect for the original building rather than reinvention.

Rooms are pared back and full of light, designed to open onto the sea, while the Mediterranean garden by landscape gardener Stan Alaguillaume follows the contours of the Estérel.

Art and design are part of the stay throughout. Rosemarie Auberson’s paintings draw on a palette of blues inspired by the sea, Caroline Denervaud’s gestural works add colour, Guy Bareff made the clay wall lights, and the antiques dealers Hélène Breheret and Benjamin Desprez chose the French furniture of the second half of the twentieth century. Even the music is curated with playlists by Spectre that change with the space and the hour.

There are three restaurants :

Récif, the Michelin starred table of Chef Alexandre Baule

Estelo, a Mediterranean terrace suspended above the waves

La Chicoula, a relaxed guinguette under the pines

Days are spent on the private beach, in the heated lap pool or the seawater pool cut into the rock, at the spa, or at the weekly yoga and pilates classes on the terrace. There is also a Technogym fitness room, kayaking, paddle boarding and mountain biking in the Estérel are close by.

The hotel also hosts weddings, seminars and celebrations, with the Mediterranean as the backdrop. It is open seasonally.
